St George's Day - 23 April 2023
As it is already a tradition, St. George’s Day will be celebrated on April 23. I am sure that most of us know the reason why we celebrate this important day in Scouting.
As a guide, I have never celebrated St. George’s Day although I have read some facts about St. George among others that he was chosen by Baden Powell as a Patron of the Scout movement and that he also is the Saint Patron of many countries and many organizations.
In the past days I have read more about his history. Baden Powell quotes: “All Scouts should know his story”.
Baden Powell chose St. George to be the movements Patron Saint because the story of St. George show him overcoming adversity and qualities that reflect a good Scout.
On this day, Scouts remind themselves of their Promise and Scout Law. Not that a Scout ever forgets either but, on St George’s Day, they make a special point of thinking about them.
I would like to remind everyone that Scouts and Guides made a promise to do their best, help others, and act with compassion and think of others before ourselves.
Wishing you all a Happy St. George’s Day celebration, I would like to finish this message with a quote of Barack Obama.
We are reminded that, in the fleeting time we have on this Earth, what matters is not wealth, or status, or power, or fame, but rather how well we have loved and what small part we have played in making the lives of other people better.
