International Literacy Day is an international observance, celebrated each year on 8 September, that was declared by UNESCO on 26 October 1966 at the 14th session of UNESCO's General Conference. It was celebrated for the first time in 1967. It is observed across the globe to promote and support the development of literacy and skills, universal access to quality education, and learning opportunities throughout people’s lives.

The theme for 2020 is “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond". It highlights the especially on the role of educators and changing pedagogies. The theme highlights literacy learning in a lifelong learning perspective, and therefore, mainly focuses on youth and adults. 

ISGF Arab Region, represented by the Community Development Committee, in cooperation with UNESCO, the Egyptian Ministry of Education and its unit of Scouts, organized the International Literacy Day. This year via the video tool ZOOM. Specialists in the field of education and literacy participated in the celebration. Mr. Ridha Hijazi, the Deputy Ministry of Education of Egypt, valued the ISGF Arab Region for this partnership in this matter. Each of them stressed the importance to confront the tide of alphabetical, technological, and cultural literacy.
The ISGF Arab Region, whose previous past experiences have proven successful, expressed its preparations of cooperation with the competent authorities in the fight against literacy.
