2017 moot 05The 15th World Scout Moot has been held in Iceland from 25th July to 2nd August 2017. It is an official event of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), hosted and organized by the Icelandic Boy and Girl Scout Association, for young people aged between 18 and 25 inclusive.

2017 moot 04There were over five thousand scouts from one hundred countries. This was the biggest Moot ever held. Along with all the scouts there were over one thousand International Service Team (IST) members both Icelandic and from other countries, all over the age 26, working before, during and after the Moot, making sure everything went smooth. Bear in mind that Iceland´s population is 340,000 and active scouts around five thousand so this was a big task for us.

2017 moot 02Elin Richards and her husband are members of Scouting as well as members of the National Scout and Guide Fellowship of Iceland. Elin’s husband was head of security at the one of the 11th places the scouts went to at the beginning and Elin was baking cakes, helping in the kitchen, serving in the shop and teaching the scouts to knit. All volunteers were working with the one goal to make the Moot memorable for our guests.

The scouts started by spreading for 5 days across the country in 11 different places where they got different opportunities to 2017 moot 03learn about Iceland´s nature and culture. Some challenged high mountains, glaciers and rivers. Some of them were hit by heavy storm and most of the tents blew away. All of them attended some social service in the area for at least one day which was highly appreciated by the locals. At last everybody gathered at Úlfljótsvatn, an outdoor and scout center.  Being part of all this, seeing all these young scouts happy, smiling and having fun with every task, being prepared to look for positive change. Change in the world we all share and have to live in. The World Scout Moot used the opportunity of having people from all around the world to debate on World Issues and how they would like to see the world. Topics debated at the Youth Forum included unemployment, education, health, water, energy, environmental sustainability, equality and conflict – or whatever you are interested in and believe is relevant.

2017 moot 01The participants left Iceland with good memories, their electronic tools full of pictures from their stay and all of them have shared in their network with old and new friends. Moot has changed all our lives. These scouts are the future´s leaders in the world both as scouts and individuals.
