St_George_2012On Saint George’s Day scouts, guides and Fellowship members remind themselves of their Promise and of the Scout/Guide Law.

Saint George was chosen by B-P, Chief Scout of the World, to be the association's patron. In the handbook "Scouting for Boys," Baden-Powell recounted that the Knights of the Round Table had adopted Saint George as their patron because he was the only one of all the saints who had been a horseman.

St George:s Day Message 2012

Renew Your Scout and Guide Promise!

At the World Scout Jamboree 2012 in Sweden, all participants renewed their scout and guide Promise during the closing ceremony. This became a solemn and memorable moment for the more than 40 000 scouts and guides.

The solidarity, working for a more peaceful earth and the will to change was felt in the air. Each one spoke their promise in their own language. That made it even more evident that, here and now, I do promise to obey the scout and guide law to my best ability, that I am the one wanting to join the efforts to build a more peaceful world – in my own part of the world. I am now returning to my native country, to my normal days, where I will share my experiences from the Jamboree. Soon, a year has passed since the Jamboree became the Great Experience. What does remain from all impressions? Many happy moments, a great many new experiences, but also opportunities for reflections and pride emerge from pictures and contacts with scout and guide friends.

We, the adult scouts and guides, also celebrate St George:s Day, a day of solidarity within the worldwide scout and guide movement. These celebrations should have a point in the programme for renewing our scout and guide promise! We belong together, young and old, new guild members and those with a long standing membership.

We are united by our scout and guide law and promise. We renew our promise in our own language, and I do speak MY OWN promise!

And when we express our motto – Once a scout/guide – Always a scout/guide – I once again cement that I do share the scouting and guiding values, to be adhered to now and forever.
